💡 Why Tamping Technique Matters

One of the most common questions we hear is:
"Do I need to tamp with exactly 30lb of pressure?"

The answer? Not really.

What matters more than the number is the quality of the tamp:

✔️ Even compression
✔️ A flat, level coffee bed
✔️ Removal of air pockets that can cause channeling

In this video by Lifestyle Lab, shots tamped at 20lb vs 35lb pressure produced no significant difference in extraction quality — as long as the tamp was even and consistent.

With the BC Auto-Levelling Tamper, you don’t need to guess. Once you’ve set the depth, simply press until the tamper’s collar rests on the portafilter rim — ensuring a level, compact puck every time.

🛠️ How to Use the V2 Tamper for Best Results

1. Start with your usual dose and basket
   Use your standard recipe (e.g. 18g in a double basket). Distribute the grounds evenly using a WDT or distributor if available.

2. Test the tamper depth

   • Place the tamper on the puck and press gently.

   • If it barely compresses the grounds, the depth is too shallow.

   • If it presses too deeply or with too much force, it's set too low.

3. Adjust the depth

   • Twist the handle to fine-tune:

     • Clockwise = shallower

     • Counterclockwise = deeper

   • You want the tamper to compress the grounds fully and for the levelling collar to rest lightly on the rim when you press down.

4. Check the result

   • After tamping, the coffee bed should be even, compact, and about 1–2mm below the basket rim.

   • If you're able to press the tamper down fully, you're already applying the right amount of pressure — no need to aim for a perfect 30lb.
